NESTalgia: A Great 8-Bit MMORPG

After playing for a few minutes I was hooked. It's like Dragon Warrior 2/3 on an MMO scale. Silk Games created this free, 8-Bit MMORPG. Angels flew down from heaven and played jazz on their trumpets when I opened the website.

This looks to be the game I've always wanted to play, since I was 5.

The game is relatively new, at least it's only recently gain popularity.

From the website:

"NEStalgia is an original MORPG inspired by the glory days of traditional console RPGs. Essentially "Dragon Warrior 3 meets World of Warcraft", NEStalgia is an amalgam of the best generations of RPG gaming.

"Wage classic turn based battles using a multiplayer party system, and enjoy modern trappings such as a full-featured quest system and hordes of epic loot to find. We even have a WoW-style Auction House for item trading!

Go check out NESTalgia and we can all post our reactions and group-up or whatever we have to do form a party of Atomic Knights and kick the internet's ass at a video game.

Go get it, get it, get it.

You can also follow Silk Games on youtube, check out the trailer below the screenshots!

  1. I'm working on something similar but with a Final Fantasy aspect. It'll also not be in Byond either... Byond lags like hell and you have to download it to get people to play it. You'll see it in something more seamless like HTML5 canvas (aka Flash alternative).

But yea, this game is cool, been there, done that when it first came out. I just didn't have a good time with some of the devs because I criticised their artwork a bit for not being true 8bit (some use poor practice like filters) and they decided to ban me for out-of-game reasons. I hope you enjoy the game though!

  2. Also, one more thing. There is a couple true 8bit games on Byond made by IainPeregrine. I highly recommend you trying them out if you like NEStalgia.

Casual Quest - Online Dungeon Crawler

  3. NESTalgia is fun so far, but yea this lag is bad. I'll withhold judgement on the lag to see how bad it effects everything.

I'm already much more interested in your project because I had a idea worked out a long time ago (while I don't think the idea would work anymore, I had some cool ideas for an airship system and general design).

I don't think using non-8bit techniques is a problem, but going full 8bit would be better. People can get defensive about their games, and anyway BYOND seems like the major problem :P

  4. The problem with Byond is, simply, it's a game engine that is only server sided. So almost every process is overloading the server. This is a big design flaw I sympathise with trying to make a Byond game before. IIRC, they tried to provide more client side processing but ended up giving up for the time being. Until they can support more client sided gaming, games like this will require 100 servers just to reach 2000 players in total, and be at a stable level. I hope they resolve this issue.

I haven't planned anything about airships quite yet, but it might be interesting nonetheless if you want to share your idea with me. My game is focusing on a more modern approach, so I guess airships wouldn't be too far off (final fantasy had them even though they were mostly medieval). I also might incorporate further vehicle design such as simple space travel (moon only probably, like FF4). These kind of decisions are a little too far ahead to be thinking of though... but they're interesting to think about.

  5. Well the idea was that you could buy an AIRSHIP for a ton of Gold, and let players ride on it.

For even more gold, you could buy a spaceship (Even FF1 has a Space Station. I think the "castle in the sky" was just a metaphor for the ancient technological civilization that obviously existed pre-game in FF1, but the remix version took it as a literal castle in the sky :P) Anyway, it would would give you access to other planets which would be added to keep the world expanding.

I've seen some MMO games run pretty well in Flash, but it tends to crash no matter what. HTML5 Canvas seems like an awesome alternative.

I'd like to follow development on your game if you have a blog for it...

  7. Wow, I really didn't think about that FF1 element. No wonder it had robots in it, haha. Very nice observation there.

Sure, just one sec while I add your blog link to mine. Thanks for following!

  11. I've been playing NESTalgia exclusively. I plan to write a full review, but you should probably be playing this game.

I'm mainly on Shrenwold, and 99% of lag issues seem to be gone now!

  12. ... that looks suspiciously like something dangerously awesome. I shouldn't check it out, lest I become utterly obsessed and addicted.

Found you by way of Famicomblog (and there by way of Red Parsley), by the way. Looks like you do good work here!

  13. That actually looks really cool. But how do the individual players work out when moving in the train/line that all characters did back in the day?

  14. Thinking of getting rich in World of Warcraft?

Consider Installing the DYNASTY: TYCOON GOLD ADDON.

The addon will automatically discover the BEST gold strategies inside the game, in real-time.

  15. UltimateWoWGuide has released the ULTIMATE in-game guide for the money hungry World of Warcraft players that truly want to reach the highest level and make lots of gold.

Unlike PDF guides our unique guide works inside the game, to constantly tell the player what to do, step-by-step, and in real-time.
