Final Fantasy VII

Join me on the adventure of a generation, and we will play through one of the greatest games ever made.

Cloud Strife, a SOLDIER with a troubled past must heal the planet, and his own fractured psyche, in order to achieve victory.

In 1997, I wanted nothing more than this game. I didn't have a PlayStation, but my family had just purchased a new PC that could actually run the insane 3d. The machine was shared by all four members of my family, so I had to negotiate playtime (also I was 12). Late at night, I would sneak down the dark corridor through the center of the house, and into the computer room. With everyone sleeping, I would mute the speakers in preparation of the Windows 98 start-up chimes. The monitor remained black until everything was ready, and I would play my game for a few extra hours.

Final Fantasy's Coneria Town Recreated in 3D

Coneria is the very first town in Final Fantasy. It's a peaceful place, known as "the dream city." Using Minecraft I've recreated the entire place, perfectly to scale. This is what the Warriors of Light would have seen at the start of their epic journey, and now you can experience it in three dimensions.

Hopefully I can get a video walkthrough of the town up soon, but until then you are welcome to log in to my Minecraft server and check it out for yourself (play.mcpaladins.com). You'll have to message me (Robot) and I might not be online, but I can be pretty flexible if you're a fan of Final Fantasy and want to experience the town in first person tonight.

Tomorrow, I'll set up a warp point on the server so anyone will be able to "/warp corneria" without my assistance.

I've used a 3:1 scale for the town, which works excellently. Every tile in the NES map has been translated into a 3x3 cube. This was a blast to create; I hope you enjoy!

Unused Final Fantasy NES Sprite

Digging around in Final Fantasy, I found an unused sprite. Looks like a king or a prince to me, but he could have been something else. Thanks to this poster on GameFAQs for tipping the internet off to this hidden secret. I'm sure the FF community has known about this for years, but its cool nonetheless.

Clearly there are dozens of unused sprites waiting to be discovered on the NES, however recognizing them can be a challenge. Final Fantasy is one of the easiest roms to "read" in Tile Layer Pro, everything is nice and neat--other games, not so much.

I wonder if the Dragon Warrior games have some unused sprites as well...

Final Fantasy Nintendo Power Scans

Final Fantasy is the best RPG on the NES. You cannot convince me otherwise. The Nintendo Power articles on it are pretty good from what I can see. These 6 pages were published in Issue 12, 1990. The creators of the guide promise more in the next few months; well, I'm going to post the next set of these tomorrow.

Thinking of starting a Final Fantasy 1 game in the summer? Perfect way to kill the boredom. Maybe you've never played the classic? Well the original cartridge came with a strategy guide, so using the Nintendo Power would probably be considered okay by most standards.

If you're looking for an easy party, just take a Fighter, Blackbelt, White Mage, and Black Mage. The Master hits harder than the Fighter, so don't listen to the naysayers who complain about "Def".

I prefer the NES and PS1 versions of this game, because they are the hardest. Other version have been significantly easier, and Square show no signs of stopping this.

They did, however, release this game for $5.00 on the VC, but I'm sure there are all kinds of way you can play this game--it's been ported to every system. Still, try to play NES, the music and graphics are by far the best! It's surprisingly modern when you compare it to everything else at the time. I wish I had this game growing up, but I didn't. I first read about it in Nintendo Power, but for some reason never bought a copy until high school. By then I was really into 16-Bit games, and let this classic slide until I was 18 years old.

I play through this classic at least once every 2 years :D
