VG Music: Horse the Band
Horse the Band call themselves "Nintendocore" and incorporate NES sounds into harcore punk music. Bunnies is a great song, and this video is animated extremely well!
I've seen these guys live twice, they put on quite a show!

VG Music: The Fresh Prince of Sonic 3
To prove exactly what I meant earlier, check out this Fresh Prince vs. Sonic 3's Endless Mine. It's much better than What a Girl Wants, and it's pretty obvious.
This is a legitimately awesome song.
VG Music: Sonic 3 vs. Pop Music
Christina Aguilera and Sonic 3, could it work? It does.
The mash-up has some rocky moments, but overall it's pretty interesting and worth a listen for Sonic fans.
The lesson everyone should learn is that Sonic has some of the best music of the last 20 years.

Pixel Art: Evil Clown
An evil 8-Bit clown, inspired by the Dragon Warrior 2 enemy. I think this would be neat in a DQ-style RPG.

Best 8-Bit System?
8-Bit City readers declared the NES to be the best 8-Bit System in the last poll.
NES, 15
Game Gear, 2
Game Boy, 1
Apple II, 2
SMS, 0
Commodore 64, 3
Atari 7800, 0
I'm not surprised that the NES won, but maybe I was expecting more votes on other systems. The NES, without a doubt, remains a powerhouse. If you are looking for games to play, you might want to check out:

VG Music: Sonic Star Light Zone
After Laybrinth Zone, the open air in Star Light zone are quite welcome. Star Light zone perfectly captures the sense of adventure found in the original Sonic.
The levels were longer, you weren't always fighting Robotnik... most of the time you're just running around.
Despite this, there is a sense of anticipation and tension in this song that drives the player to continue on and hints at future challenges.

Final Fantasy Nintendo Power Scans
Final Fantasy is the best RPG on the NES. You cannot convince me otherwise. The Nintendo Power articles on it are pretty good from what I can see. These 6 pages were published in Issue 12, 1990. The creators of the guide promise more in the next few months; well, I'm going to post the next set of these tomorrow.
Thinking of starting a Final Fantasy 1 game in the summer? Perfect way to kill the boredom. Maybe you've never played the classic? Well the original cartridge came with a strategy guide, so using the Nintendo Power would probably be considered okay by most standards.
If you're looking for an easy party, just take a Fighter, Blackbelt, White Mage, and Black Mage. The Master hits harder than the Fighter, so don't listen to the naysayers who complain about "Def".
I prefer the NES and PS1 versions of this game, because they are the hardest. Other version have been significantly easier, and Square show no signs of stopping this.
They did, however, release this game for $5.00 on the VC, but I'm sure there are all kinds of way you can play this game--it's been ported to every system. Still, try to play NES, the music and graphics are by far the best! It's surprisingly modern when you compare it to everything else at the time. I wish I had this game growing up, but I didn't. I first read about it in Nintendo Power, but for some reason never bought a copy until high school. By then I was really into 16-Bit games, and let this classic slide until I was 18 years old.
I play through this classic at least once every 2 years :D

Play Kaboom Online and Kaboom Atari 2600 Box Scans
I found this really good port of Kaboom! today and I've been playing for the last 30 minutes :D
The Atari 2600 has some awesome paddle games, and Kaboom is one of the best. The concept is so simple, catch the bombs before the hit the ground and explode, but the challenge and fun are top-notch.
This was another masterpiece by Activision, and it would spawn countless other Arcade and TI-83 clones.
Freewebarcade has a really nice Kaboom flash game, and this makes me want to search for an Atari 2600 Web-based emulator. In any event, you can bide the time until then saving the city from the crazy person in Kaboom!
It might seem primitive, but anything that was actually fun to play in 1981 was a great game. Kaboom! truly stands the test of time, like dozens of other Atari 2600 masterpieces.
This port is flawless and uses the mouse very well. Check out the box scans on 8-Bit City before you get a high score! The servers are down (this game was ported in 2002), but I just scored a 775. The challenge increases quickly to truly test your reflexes and skill.

Pixel Art: Steampunk Scientist
The last character in this four-part Steampunk pixel art series.
Every smart steampunk party needs a scientist! Yea, a Lucca ripoff--but this girl's green!
Pixel Art: Steampunk King
This guy is like some horrible Big Bird nightmare. A King wanted to live forever, so he put himself into this awful brass iron man prototype. Inside he's like a mummy.
He'd be like a dark knight in the party, casting curses, heavily armored, and hitting hard.
I'll post the last character sometime this afternoon.

Pixel Art: Steampunk Dinosaur Ranger
The second party member in my Steampunk series, a Dinosaur ranger. These characters are just mock-ups, but they go well together. I've got 1 more that I'll probably post tomorrow morning, so check back! I plan on drawing a 4th for this RPG party, since the last one on had 3 characters.
Also, Dinosaur Ranger doesn't have to make sense, he's from the race of Dinosaur Rangers that would be awesome if they existed.

River City Ransom Nintendo Power Scans
What better way to celebrate the 4th of July than with some good old fashion ass kicking? These date way back from Issue 10 of Nintendo Power (January, 1990). The drawing of Simon Slick at the end is pretty cool. I was missing this issue for some reason and had to download the .pdf. I would have loved to have it as a kid, maybe then I would have played River City Ransom earlier.
This Nintendo Power spread is surprisingly badass, and covers the entire game!
Final Fight is great, and nothing fucks with River City Ransom except River City Ransom EX on the GBA.
Part of the Kunio-Kun series (Translates to "Ryan the Dude"; don't argue with my translation), River City Ransom had a few fun sequels: Samurai Warriors on the NES, and River City Ransom 2 and 3 for the SNES. River City Ransom 2 and 3 have different names, but both games are pretty cool and have been fan translated.
I parody'd the shit out of River City Ransom in my 2011 underrated classic, Fight Town.
You can also buy this gem for $5.00 on the VC. Thanks Technos and Nintendo :D
Celebrate the 4th by teaming up with a friend and kicking the shit out of every gang in River City.

The Making of Super Mario Bros. 3
This article was published in Issue 10 (January 1990). It details some of the technology created for Super Mario Brothers 3.--this technology would radically change the standard for graphics in video games, it almost looked 16-bit, and was the most fun game to play for years.
Eventually, I have come to enjoy other game more than this one, but many gamers consider it the best of the best--so why not learn about its history and little about Miyamoto, who apparently used to let his friends call him "doctor."
Other fun facts like that inside these Nintendo Power scans.

VG Music: 8Bit Killer "Fighting for Control"
RushJet1 did an amazing job with the music for Locamalito's instant classic 8Bit Killer.
I've reviewed the game before, you should check out my review.
That was late 2008, and over the last few years I've enjoyed this game (and Hydorah) even more. It ranks in the upper realm of FPSs with Doom and Quake 2.
All the other music is amazing as well.
These two tracks, however, are definitely my favorites.
