Let's Play Streets of Rage

Streets of Rage is one of the best beat 'em ups ever created. Hell, it's one of the best games ever created and it's a perfect choice for a Let's Play.

I have spent many night playing through Streets of Rage on the Wii VC. I'll never get tired of the killer music and neon-filled city streets.

You can watch the video below, or check it out on youtube.

VG Music: Top 70 NES Songs

Found this awesome top 70 list of NES songs on youtube this week. I don't agree 100% with the choices, but it definitely introduced me to like 10 songs I had never heard before! Great list, great listen.

Maybe this explains my recent delusions of beating Castlevania...

Dwarf Fortress "There Will Be Ghosts" Episodes 3 - 5

Not going down without a fight. The conclusion to my first Dwarf Fortress video. This was a great fortress with lots of steel, it's too bad I didn't master the art of gearing out 2 squads of Dwarfs earlier. I had the metal.

It was fun making these videos, and I hope to make more Dwarf Fortress episodes very soon.My mic is driving my crazy, I need to get a new one ASAP. At least I can turn it off when I'm not talking. I try not to talk to much.

Dwarf Fortress "There Will Be Ghosts" Episode 1

"There Will Be Ghosts" is a 5-part Dwarf Fortress mini-series. Witness the rise and fall of an epic Dwarven Kingdom.

As the title promises, there is at least one ghost in fortress.

Let's Play ToME - Part 2

This is the second video in my ToME Let's Play. In this episode, we will explore more of the ruins of Kor'pal. It is a dangerous place indeed.

This roguelike is shaping up to be an epic adventure. Picture sort of related. Not related.

VG Music: Flash FM

I scored Vice City Stories today for my new PSP, so I thought I'd make a Vice City post in celebration. Flash FM isn't the best station, but damn it it's good enough to use as some background music while you play MAME or pretend to work.

Deeds of Yore - An 8-Bit Webseries

Deeds of Yore is an 8-Bit Webseries created by Ostrog Productions and set inside a Commodore 64 cartridge. It won "best animated series" from the LA Web Series Festival 2012, and it's easy to see why. Ostrog has created a truly unsettling world of gnomes, tigers, and flat animation easily comparable to something you'd expect from Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

It's a standard classic technology plot: a human from Earth gets trapped inside a computer world, and fun/hilarity ensue. It's a time-tested formula (From Captain N to Tron to the much more recent, Captain S), but Deeds of Yore keeps it fresh with the Ultima-style RPG jokes.

Characters move around as tiled versions of themselves, townspeople spout the same borderline nonsense they do in game, and everything is generally strange and creepy.

Admittedly, I've never played a C64, but I've always wanted to. I grew up on an IBM 286 playing Rogue and Moraff's World, and if you've played any older RPGs the humor should easily translate.

There are currently 13 episodes, and the first four have been pretty hilarious. I'm about to watch the 5th right now, and will probably just blaze through all of them.

If you are into classic RPGs, video games, or humor in general then watch Deeds of Yore. I cannot speak more clearly that that.

...This is really making me want to play the actual game--which I'm pretty sure doesn't exist. Or does it?

And you can watch the first episode below, and make sure to subscribe to their Youtube so you can catch the new episodes as they air. Things seem pretty normal in the first episode, but just wait until you get sucked into this crazy computer land.

Mutant Warzone OST - "The World Is Mad and So Am I"

The 4th song I composed for the Mutant Warzone OST.

Written on guitar and keyboard, compiled in Fruity Loops 9.

I wanted the player to be encouraged to explore because of the guitar. The beat won't stop, and the player's going to need that to destroy the added zombies in fast mode.

Mutant Warzone OST - Robot - Radiation Nation

Radiation Nation: my second track to go along with the Mutant Warzone OST. I wrote it one keyboard and guitar and sequenced in Fruity Loops 9.

The guitars and synths go perfect with the retro style.

Mutant Warzone OST - Robot - Flies in the Morning

I wrote a song for the Mutant Warzone OST! I'll write at least one more. I composed this on my laughable casio keyboard and sequenced everything in Fruity Loop 9 Demo version.

Happy 3-years of 8-Bit City!

Mega Man 9 Secret Found?

This was a glitch I stumbled upon in Mega Man 9. I used a Black Hole Bomb right as Wily shot his sparks and he got stuck...

I don't think this is the secret, just a glitch, but it's never been revealed so who knows? Personally, I don't think a Mega Man 9 "secret" ever existed. Pretty lame, Capcom.

Proto Man 2 Gameplay Video

Gameplay footage from my Proto Man 2 hack.

You can also watch this on youtube, but why?

I lost part 1 of the video, but I play through several Robot Master stages and Wily's Castle. Thanks to the new youtube features, it's 1 video and 1 hour long, which is pretty cool. I think part one only had Bubble, Metal, and Wood Man stages.

If this won't get you in the mood to play Proto Man 3, nothing will.

These are 4 very interesting Mega Man 3 related videos. Yea, this is a lazy post but w/e it's a lazy day.

Let's Play Xevious

Xevious is another early '80s Namco masterpiece. Often overlooked in America, I think gamers have easily dismissed it as simplistic and boring. However, an in-depth study proves quite the opposite: after playing the game intensely, Xevious reveals surprising depth. Here we can see the true origins of bullet hell shooters (most specifically vertically scrolling shooters like Radiant Silvergun, Ikaruga, 194X, Blazing Lazers, Viper Phase 5, etc. Xevious surpasses them all.

Although you only have a machine gun and air-to-surface missiles, the Solvalou has infinite ammo. It's weapons don't need to be stronger, one hit kills any monster, even the badass motherships. You'll have to land that bomb precisely, however, and dodge like a true ninja. If you want to improve in Xevious, don't play on the easy setting, but give yourself as many lives as possible and stay cool. Ground targets generally give more points, so spam your machine guns and drop your bombs with high precision.

I first bought Xevious as an NES cart at a flea market at age 16. I did not enjoy the game. It was difficult and seemed repetitive. The problem wasn't the game, I just sucked. Also, the music is painful, no way around it. In all of the Let's Play videos I mute the sound. I played the arcade cabinet in college and still play a different machine from time to time. In fact, the game might be in the multi-cab arcade across the street, which would be awesome.

For more tips and gameplay check out the 4 parts of the Let's Play. Part 1 is uploaded now, with the others soon to come. I've actually only recorded Part 2, and I'm looking forward to an evening of Xevious and free streaming music via Grooveshark.

Ms. Pac-Man High Scores

7 months since the last post, and no better way to celebrate than with a youtube video! 2010 got a little hectic there, but hopefully things will return to normal on 8bitcity. I'll be posting everyday this week to start the year off right, so check back!

I've been playing Ms. Pac-Man lately after growing bored with the original Pac-Man; the multiple mazes, speed hack version, lack of patterns, and bouncing fruit make it quite the superior game.

What's with the Pacmania you ask? Some games get boring, some don't. The arcade classics are of course the most resilient.
